Basket Folk Art Karen Indian ''Tum'' Fish

Price: 74.00 & 8.00 shipping

$ 74.00     Unavailable     Back

Beautifully Woven and Very Graceful Basket with Incredible Strength Due To The Tight Weave And Curvature. A Tum is a fish trap made of bamboo strips. Though they are now seldom used, there are still a few older craftsmen who can weave these incredible pieces. It is made totally by hand and takes 3 days to weave one basket. The materials are woven so tightly that the object looks thick and the shape is so pleasing that it makes one feel peaceful. This basket stands approximately 11" tall and is approximately 9" at the widest point. A Tum was used to trap fish in low lying land, near a bank of a pond. To trap fish with a Tum, it is placed in such a way that its top hole floats above the water level. Near the valve at the bottom hole there is bait. The lid is so precisely made that it actually snaps into place. It stands alone as a beautiful sculpture or is perfect for storage or floral arrangements. This is by far the nicest basket in my collection. Sometimes called "Tum Chu","I-chu" or "Kra-chu". Price: 74.00 & 8.00 shipping
